Background of the Study
Yoruba digital literature in Ibadan has rapidly evolved, incorporating diverse narrative structures that reflect both traditional storytelling and modern digital expression. Digital platforms provide writers with innovative tools to experiment with form, structure, and multimedia elements, resulting in narratives that are both dynamic and culturally resonant (Akin, 2023). These narrative structures range from hypertextual storytelling to interactive fiction, where the reader's engagement shapes the narrative flow. The integration of traditional Yoruba storytelling motifs—such as proverbs, mythological references, and allegorical narratives—with digital techniques has created a unique literary genre that bridges past and present (Ogunleye, 2024). Scholars argue that the digital medium enhances narrative complexity and offers new avenues for cultural expression. This study assesses the narrative structures in Yoruba digital literature, exploring how authors utilize digital tools to innovate while preserving cultural heritage. By analyzing various digital texts and reader interactions, the research aims to uncover the ways in which narrative structures contribute to meaning-making and cultural continuity in an increasingly digital literary landscape (Akin, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the burgeoning field of Yoruba digital literature, there is limited research on the narrative structures that underpin these works. Existing studies often focus on content rather than form, leaving a gap in understanding how digital techniques and traditional narrative elements combine to create innovative literary forms (Ogunleye, 2024). This gap restricts our comprehension of the mechanisms through which cultural heritage is maintained and transformed in digital narratives. The study aims to address this deficiency by critically examining narrative structures in Yoruba digital literature and assessing their impact on reader engagement and cultural expression.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the narrative structures in Yoruba digital literature.

  2. To analyze the integration of traditional and digital narrative elements.

  3. To evaluate the impact of narrative structures on cultural expression.

Research Questions

  1. What narrative structures are predominant in Yoruba digital literature?

  2. How are traditional storytelling elements integrated into digital formats?

  3. What is the impact of these structures on reader engagement?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the innovative narrative structures in Yoruba digital literature, contributing to the fields of digital humanities and cultural studies. The findings will inform literary scholars, digital content creators, and cultural preservationists about the evolution of storytelling in the digital age (Akin, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the narrative structures in Yoruba digital literature produced in Ibadan and does not include print literature or digital works from other regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Narrative Structures: The organization and arrangement of events in a story.

  • Digital Literature: Literary works created and distributed via digital platforms.

  • Yoruba Digital Literature: Digital texts that reflect Yoruba cultural and literary traditions.
